New Jersey governor didn't actually invite an immigrant to live in his home, spokesperson says
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy sparked Republican outrage over recent comments suggesting he and the state’s first lady offered an immigrant with uncertain immigration status the opportunity to stay at their home. But the governor's spokesperson, Mahen Gunaratna, said Tuesday that Murphy didn't actually make such an offer and that the person never moved in. Gunaratna says the governor was speaking to his wife about someone they knew who was a legal resident in the country, but was worried about their status. He says the governor said he suggested inviting the person to stay at their house, but the offer wasn’t actually extended.
