Way Too Early Mets 2025 Opening Day Roster Prediction

0

With the offseason nearing its end and pitchers and catchers reporting in just a few short weeks (Feb. 12 for the Mets), it’s time for a way too early Opening Day roster projection. Top names like Alex Bregman and Pete Alonso (more on the Polar Bear later) remain on the market, and they could sign any day now.

These predictions are never certain; injuries happen, surprises occur, etc. The Mets play their first spring training game against the Astros on Saturday, February 22, in a split-squad matchup. After that, the season begins Thursday, March 27 in Houston. With two months to go before the Mets open the 2025 campaign in Texas, let’s predict what their 26-man Opening Day roster might look like.

Starting Lineup

  1. Francisco Lindor, SS
  2. Juan Soto, RF
  3. Pete Alonso, 1B
  4. Brandon Nimmo, LF
  5. Mark Vientos, 3B
  6. Jesse Winker, DH
  7. Francisco Alvarez, C
  8. Jeff McNeil, 2B
  9. Tyrone Taylor, CF

The big question mark right now is obviously Alonso. There’s been an unprecedented and unexpected amount of drama surrounding his negotiations, so much so that owner Steve Cohen openly voiced his frustrations with the process at the team’s Amazin’ Day. However, I believe Pete will be a Met. Rumors emerged about meetings with the Angels and Blue Jays, and the Mets were reportedly ready to pivot to ‘Plan B.’ But Alonso is still a free agent. I can be wrong, and there’s a good chance I will be, but it still feels like all roads lead back to Queens for Alonso.

The Mets acquired Jose Siri from the Rays over the offseason, but Taylor still cracks the Opening Day lineup for me. Re-signed Winker takes over for Starling Marte, who, if not traded before the season begins (and I don’t think he will), acts as a platoon player in 2025.

Rotation

No more front-line additions for the team here, but the Mets finally commit to a six-man rotation. Blackburn (4.66 ERA, 75.1 IP, 59 SO in 2024) notches the final spot, beating out Tylor Megill (4.04 ERA, 78 IP, 91 SO in 2024) and Griffin Canning (5.19 ERA, 171.2 IP, 130 SO in 2024).

Bench

Brett Baty misses the cut here. Acuña follows up on his stellar September showing (.308/.325/.641/.966 in 14 games) in spring, and the Mets send Baty to Syracuse to hone his outfield skills. (Yes, he’s already taking reps at first this offseason).

Bullpen

Notable misses here are Sean Reid-Foley and Huascar Brazobán, as the team opts to go with Buttó and Canning, two arms that can provide length. The Mets also stick with Young, complimenting the newly acquired Minter as the two southpaws out of the pen, something the Mets were lacking in recent years. Expect to see Núñez, who shined in his 2024 debut year (2.31 ERA, 35 IP, 25 G) before being shut down with a flexor injury in the seventh, Garrett/Minter in the eighth and Díaz in the ninth.
