Second annual seed swap event coming to Manhattan

0

MANHATTAN (KSNT) - The Flint Hills Discovery Center (FHDC) in Manhattan will be holding its second annual seed swap event next month.

Attendees of the event will be able to visit various tables grouped by category. Tables will be set up for vegetables, annual flowers, perennials, native plants, herbs and more. The seed swap event will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 16 at the Flint Hills Discovery Center at 315 South Third Street.

“Last year was our first event and we had a wonderful response with about 300 people showing up,” said event volunteer Kelly Yarbrough. “We’re looking forward to this becoming an annual tradition in Manhattan that grows over time.”

The FHDC gave some guidelines for the event:

  • Put seeds into sample sizes using envelopes or small bags.
  • Label seeds with plant names, when to plant, where it’s harvested and any other relevant information.
  • For bulk seeds, label bags so attendees can package and label their bags.
  • Attendees are encouraged to bring containers. A packaging and labeling station will be provided.
  • Participants are encouraged to only take what they will use this year.
  • If you don’t have seeds to contribute, you can bring envelopes or small bags to donate for seed packaging and storage.

Volunteers from Riley County Master Gardeners will be available to answer questions. The Sunset Zoo, The Land Institute, Riley County Master Gardeners and other local organizations will have kid-friendly activities. You can learn more about the seed swap event by clicking here.
