'It's ridiculous': Egg prices put strain on Topeka restaurants.

TOPEKA (KSNT) - Topeka restaurants say they're paying more than $100 for a case of eggs.

27 News reached out to Bradley's Corner Cafe, a breakfast restaurant in the North Topeka Art District (NOTO), to find out what it is paying for a case of eggs. The restaurant buys eggs in cases with each case made up of 15 dozen eggs. Restaurant Manager Jacque Duchesneau said he is paying about $112 for a case of eggs when he used to pay $35 to $65.

"It's ridiculous at the moment, it's about $100 more than when we opened the doors in October 2023," Duchesneau said.

Owner of Juli's Coffee and Bistro, Wayne Edkin, told 27 News he's considering raising prices on some menu items due to already thin margins.

"We were just talking about that this morning we're probably going to have to raise our prices on our breakfast that contains eggs because the price of eggs have quadrupled in the past year," Edkins said.

Edkins said his restaurant usually buys eggs wholesale by the case and then supplements them with dozens from Dillon's or Sam's Club.

"The price of everything is going up but I know eggs have been real obvious lately," Edkins said.

Currently, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is reporting large egg prices of $7.16-7.25 per carton in the south-central region, which includes Kansas. The USDA reports supplies of eggs are light to moderate with very active market activity.

Duchesneau said it has been hurting the restaurant's bottom line because they make everything from scratch. Duchesneau said egg prices per case have been as low as $18 in the past.
