New 'Superman' Trailer Reveals One Iconic Location

0

The new Superman film is still several months away. But between now and July 11, it's fair to assume there will be a lot of hype around this epic reboot. After the full teaser trailer exceeded expectations back in December, new TV spots have started popping up, doling out a little bit of new footage each time. The first of these is a short 30-second teaser called "Icon." And though most of what's in this teaser was already glimpsed in the original, longer trailer, there is one new reveal that ties back to beloved Superman lore.

Very briefly, a few new shots in the trailer seem to confirm that the snowy Arctic locale in several scenes is due to Superman (David Corenswet) visiting his famous Fortress of Solitude.

First introduced in Superman comics in 1958, the Arctic sanctuary for Kal-El was loosely inspired by another "Fortress of Solitude" located in the same area; in the 1930s, early pulp hero Doc Savage also had a "Fortress of Solitude." Although Doc Savage was decidedly not from the planet Krypton, we now certainly associate the Fortress with Superman more than any other character.

Often shown as crystalline in structure, the Fortress of Solitude was most famously depicted on screen in the Christopher Reeve Superman films, starting in 1978. In this new trailer for the upcoming 2025 Superman, we briefly see a crystalline structure growing, which can only be the Fortress of Solitude. On top, there's a quick scene of Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) seemingly checking out the area, trying to find Superman's home base. The idea of Lex Luthor finding the Fortress of Solitude happened in Superman II in 1981, and also, in Superman Returns in 2006, though it's unclear if that's exactly what's happening here.

Either way, Superman's saying "take me home" to his dog Krypto in the first trailer might refer to the Fortress of Solitude. This is a big deal not just because the Fortress of Solitude is so iconic, but also because this is the first time since 2006 that the Fortress of Solitude has appeared in a Superman motion picture. From 2013's Man of Steel through 2017's Justice LeagueHenry Cavill's Man of Steel never visited the Fortress of Solitude. So, Superman is really coming home, in more ways than one.

Superman hits theaters on July 11.
