Jasprit Bumrah creates History: First Indian pace bowler to…
As the star pacer topped the leadings with 71 wickets in 13 Test matches in 2024, Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah became the sixth Indian to receive the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year award. The Indians to receive this award are Rahul Dravid (2004), Gautam Gambhir (2009), Virender Sehwag (2010), Ravichandran Ashwin (2016), and Virat Kohli (2018). India matches Australia’s record for the most players to have win the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year award.
Steve Smith is the only player who has received this award twice in his career-2017 and 2017. Bumrah was the highest wicket-taker in Tests in 2024, as he took 71 wickets.
After being sidelined due to back injury, Jasprit Bumrah came back to the longest format by the ending of 2023 with an outstanding performance, and set several records with his impressive wicket-total. India’s success in home series were greatly influenced by the right-arm bowler, who helped the team secure success against Bangladesh and England. He also performed elegantly in overseas conditions.
During the time when Test scores were quickly made, Bumrah bowled 357 incredible overs while maintaining a splendid economy of 2.96. Bumrah finished 2024 with an incredible strike rate of just 30.1.
With him securing 71 wickets, he joined the prestigious group of Ravichandran Ashwin, Anil Kumble, and Kapil Dev as the only bowler to take more than 70 wickets in Test cricket within a year.
