Senator Schumer calls on Trump to reinstate school safety board
NEW YORK (PIX11) -- New York Senator Chuck Schumer stated that President Donald Trump is violating the law after shutting down the interagency School Safety Board.
The senator argued he made the board permanent in a bipartisan gun bill passed in 2022 and it can’t be removed. “I am asking President Trump and Secretary Noam to immediately bring the safety board back.”
Senator Chuck Schumer refers to the Federal Safety Clearinghouse Advisory Board under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security aimed to help prevent school shootings. It was created by President Trump’s first administration, following the Parkland shooting.
“No matter how somebody feels about guns, we agree more has to be done to keep kids in school safe,” said Cameron Kasky, a Parkland shooting survivor. He was 17 years old and a junior back then. He says shootings across America are becoming a harsh reality.
“What’s important is that when we face things like this, we don’t stop the fight,” added Kasky.
“They are shutting it down before you even see what It does,” said Schumer.
The board held its first meeting last October and it included school safety experts, parents of children who’ve died in school shootings, advocates for civil rights and community and school leaders.
“It means a lot because you leave them in the care of people for 8 hours a day, so I definitely want to know they are being taken care of,” Monica Werkheiscer is the mother of two teenage girls, a high school freshman and junior.
“Even the school was like, all these changes are coming to soon. We don’t have the time we need to try to figure out how to best protect our kids. it is not just the safety of school shootings but now there is immigration issues happening,” added Monica Werkheiscer.
Meanwhile, Homeland Security said the decision was made as part of the agency’s commitment to eliminating misuse of resources and making sure that DHS activities prioritize national security.
“The Trump administration should not bow down to the NRA,” concluded Schumer.
“They need to see the effects of the violence firsthand; they need to hear from survivors, they need to hear from people who are hiding from shootings, they need to hear from people who have experienced the loss,” said Kasky.
According to Senator Schumer, there were 330 school shootings last year.
