Senate Confirms Pro-Life Defense Secretary Nominee Pete Hegseth

0

The U.S. Senate has confirmed pro-life veteran Pete Hegseth as the Defense Secretary. The vote was split down party lines, with 50 votes for and 50 votes against and Vice President JD Vance cast the tie-breaking vote in Hegseth’s favor.

Republican defections included Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell, Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski and Republican Sen. Susan Collins.

Known for his outspoken pro-life values, Hegseth’s nomination aligns with the priorities of the pro-life movement, which wants to see all military abortion funding stopped.

“I’ve always been personally Pro-Life…” Pete Hegseth proclaimed at his confirmation hearing last week.

Pete Hegseth, a decorated Army veteran and former host of Fox & Friends, has been a vocal advocate for pro-life principles throughout his career. While his military background underscores his qualifications for the role, his nomination has drawn praise from pro-life groups that want to see the military stop funding abortion travel.

Hegseth has publicly supported legislation aimed at limiting abortion and redirecting federal funding from organizations that perform abortions to community health centers that provide comprehensive care. Supporters believe his leadership will reinforce a defense policy grounded in respect for life and the dignity of all people, born and unborn.

As of right now, a military servicewoman or a qualifying dependent can abort their precious baby on taxpayers’ dime. This policy currently allows service members, including those stationed in Texas, to be reimbursed for abortion travel, with up to 21 days of leave.

Hawaiian Senator Hirono questioned his thoughts on this policy, saying, “Current GOP Policy allows servicemembers and eligible dependents to be reimbursed for travel associated with non-covered reproductive healthcare, including abortions. Will you maintain this common-sense policy?”

“Senator, I’ve always been personally Pro-Life, I know President Trump has as well; we will review all policies but our standard is whatever the president wants on this particular issue, with my advice, I will take a look at but-”

Interrupting his statement, Hirono concluded, “Okay so um, haha, if the president tells you that this common-sense policy will not be maintained, you will not enable our service members to seek reproductive care. That’s what it sounds like to me. I’m not hearing answers to my questions.”

“I don’t think that the federal government should be funding travel for abortion,” Hegseth confirmed.

The Trump administration and its allies in Congress remain confident that Hegseth’s qualifications and commitment to defending American values will secure his confirmation. If confirmed, Hegseth would be the first Defense Secretary explicitly associated with pro-life advocacy, signaling a new chapter in the integration of life-affirming principles into the highest levels of government leadership.
