New date for the ACE Eddie Awards
The American Cinema Editors have chosen Friday, March 14 as the new date for their 75th annual awards ceremony, after being postposed from Jan. 18 due to the Southern California wildfires. (That means it will now occur nearly two weeks after the Oscars air on March 2.) While the event will still take place at UCLA’s Royce Hall, it has been re-conceived as a “Come as You Are” fundraiser with no dress code, and a portion of the ticket sales and sponsorships will now go toward fire relief.
Wicked director Jon M. Chu is still on board to receive the Filmmaker of the Year honor, which recognizes “a filmmaker who exemplifies distinguished achievement in the art and business of film.” Meanwhile, film editors Maysie Hoy and Paul Hirsch will receive Career Achievement awards for their “outstanding contributions to film editing.” See all of the 2025 ACE Eddie Awards nominations.
The Diplomat stages The West Wing mini-reunion
C.J. Cregg and Josh Lyman are returning to the White House! Allison Janney, who won four Emmys for playing the press secretary on The West Wing, is re-teaming with her old cast mate Bradley Whitford, who took home an Emmy for his role as the deputy chief of staff, on Season 3 of The Diplomat. Whitford will be playing the role of the First Gentleman to Janney’s President Grace Penn, according to Deadline.
The Diplomat was notably created by The West Wing writer-producer Debora Cahn. The third season is currently in production for Netflix. Keri Russell received a Best Actress Emmy nomination for Season 1 in 2023, while Season 2 is eligible at the 2025 Emmys.
A Scary Movie reboot is coming in Summer 2026
The tongue-in-cheek film series developed by Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, and Keenen Ivory Wayans is getting the reboot treatment. The sixth film in the franchise will hit theaters on June 12, 2026, per Marlon’s Instagram story that instructed fans, “Mark your calendar.” That’s more than 13 years after the most recent edition, Scary Movie 5 (2013). The first four installments were released in 2000, 2001, 2003, and 2006.
The Wayans brothers are restarting the horror parody flicks with writer-producer Rick Alvarez. The first Scary Movie remains one of the highest grossing R-rated horror movies ever, earning $157 million in the United States and $278 million worldwide. Details about the cast and plot of the new Scary Movie reboot are still under wraps.
Oscar’s ‘class photo’ will still happen, but with a twist
One of the favorite parts of awards season is the “class photo,” where all of the nominees in every category come together at the Oscar Nominees Luncheon to celebrate their accomplishments. This year’s get-together was understandably canceled because of the Los Angeles wildfires, but now it’s been rescheduled to the week leading up to the March 2 Oscar ceremony, according to Variety.
The twist is that the nominees will take their long-awaited group photo without the celebratory reading of their names, and they will also attend a series of smaller dinners organized by categories, as opposed to having one single lunch. It’s still unclear whether that means there will be 23 separate dinners (one for each category), or if some fields will be combined together (i.e. all 20 acting nominees).
SAG names its 2025 ambassadors
Sofia Carson and Noah Centineo have been tapped to serve as the ambassadors of the 31st Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, which will stream Feb. 23, 2025, on Netflix. Prior SAG ambassadors include Taylor Zakhar Perez, Yara Shahidi, Joey King, Alexandra Daddario, Ross Butler, Jurnee Smollett, Haley Lu Richardson, Phil Dunster, Logan Browning, Antonia Gentry, and Harry Shum Jr.
The Righteous Gemstones to end with Season 4 on HBO
HBO’s Emmy-nominated comedy series The Righteous Gemstones will end with Season 4, Variety reports. The final season is expected to premiere in March. “The Lord spoke to me and said it’s time to wrap this sucker up,” series creator and star Danny McBride said. “The story this season made the themes, ideas, and characters in ‘The Righteous Gemstones’ feel whole and complete. I have loved every second of working with this team for the past eight years, and there are some incredible payoffs, twists, and turns in store over the course of this wild final season.”
The Righteous Gemstones follows a world-famous televangelist family with a long tradition of deviance, greed, and charitable work. The series stars Danny McBride, Adam Devine, John Goodman, Edi Patterson, Cassidy Freeman, Tim Baltz, Tony Cavalero, Greg Alan Williams, and Skyler Gisondo. It has earned four Emmy nominations: Best Stunt Coordination for a Comedy Series (2022, 2024), Best Contemporary Costumes (2024), and Best Stunt Performance (2024).
