Topeka Rescue Mission director talks warming centers, homeless count
TOPEKA (KSNT) - Topeka Rescue Mission (TRM) Executive Director LaManda Broyles joined the 27 News morning show on Friday to discuss warming centers, cold weather exceptions and the 2025 point-in-time homeless count.
Broyles said the TRM has had policies in place for opening the warming centers since the early 1990s. She said TRM has different policies for opening these spaces depending on what kind of weather is in the area and how cold it gets.
"We have basically like a mini warming center at the rescue mission when it hits those degrees," Broyles said.
Broyles said TRM's goal when doing the point-in-time homeless count is to get an accurate count. She said once the count is over, TRM shifts gears back into advocacy work.
"I'm really proud of all the other organizations in addition to TRM, the City of Topeka, who last year said: 'we're going to do this above and beyond, and did a summer count as well,'" Broyles said.
