Southwest Offering Huge Discount for Frequent Fliers for a Limited Time

Southwest Airlines is offering travelers an unbelievable deal on Rapid Rewards points, but only for a limited time.

The airline is slicing the price of its Rapid Rewards, offering discounts of at least 40 and up to 50 percent; but you’ll have to log into your account to view your frequent flyer status to see which discount you’re eligible for. “Turn your points into plans,” the airline urged travelers in its announcement. “Reveal savings of 40 percent, 45 percent, or 50 percent off Rapid Rewards points and make this year your best travel yet.”

The degree of discount fluctuates based on your “elite status” level within the airline in addition to other mitigating factors. For example, those who are “eligible for the maximum 50 percent discount” must make a “minimum purchase of 3,000 points,” which the airline notes “effectively reduc[es] the cost of buying Southwest points from 3 cents to 1.5 cents per point.”

The promotion is a good alternative for frequent fliers who are only a few thousand points shy of scoring a free ticket, allowing them to purchase points to make up the difference at a rate which is ultimately below what they would pay for a regular ticket. For example, if you have 20,000 points towards a free ticket which requires 24,000 points, the extra 4,000 would cost you only about $60, a preferable option to a full-price ticket.

As with all good things, the deal is only available for a limited time. The promotion will end on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 11:59 p.m., and customers are limited to a maximum purchase of 100,000 points per day until the sale’s conclusion.
