Indonesia agrees to repatriate ailing French national who has spent almost 20 years on death row
Indonesia has signed a deal to send home an ailing French national on death row for drug offenses. Serge Atlaoui, 61, has spent almost 20 years in an Indonesian prison. In 2015 he won a last-minute reprieve from being executed by a 13-member firing squad. France and Indonesia agreed a deal on Friday after the father of four, who is reportedly suffering from cancer, wrote to the Indonesian government requesting to serve the rest of his sentence in his home country. The deal will allow Atlaoui to return home on Feb. 4.
