A Chicago police officer shot and wounded a man who claimed he harmed his family and had weapons in his Mount Greenwood home Thursday afternoon, according to police and sources.

Officers responded to a report of a person with a gun about 3:50 p.m. at a home in the 11000 block of South Millard Avenue where they saw the man leaning out of the second-floor window of his home, Chicago police said.

Officers ordered him to keep his hands visible, police said. One officer fired his gun, striking the man and causing him to fall out of the home.

The man, whose age wasn’t released, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, a Chicago Fire Department spokesperson said. He was listed in serious condition.

Sources said the man who was wounded appeared to be in the midst of a mental health crisis.

Before the shooting, the man called 911 and said he harmed his family and had weapons in the home, sources said. However, no one else was found injured when police responded.

The officer who fired his gun was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital for observation, officials said. He will be placed on routine administrative duties for at least 30 days, per CPD policy.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability, which investigates all police shootings, is investigating. Anyone with information is asked to contact COPA at (312) 746-3609.
