Cyclist arrested during Portland traffic stop for 20 counts of child sex abuse

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A 48-year-old Oregon man was arrested and booked into the Multnomah County Jail on Jan. 21 for an outstanding warrant for 20 counts of child sex abuse allegedly committed in 2022.

Portland Police Bureau spokesperson Mike Benner told KOIN 6 News that suspect Brandon Michael Reder was arrested during a traffic stop after police found that a warrant was issued for his arrest out of Multnomah County for 10 counts of encouraging child sex abuse in the first degree and 10 counts of encouraging child sex abuse in the second degree.

A PPB Central Bike Squad officer stopped Reder near the intersection of Everett Street and 6th Avenue in Northwest Portland at approximately 11 a.m. to warn him that it’s illegal to ride a bike on the sidewalk in Portland. During the stop, officers learned about his outstanding warrants.

“We simply stopped him to speak to him and tell him riding on the sidewalk is a violation of city ordinance,” Benner said. “Only then did we learn who he was and learn he had a felony warrant and that is why he was arrested.”

The warrant was issued after Reder allegedly failed to follow the conditions of his pretrial release, an affidavit filed on Oct. 11, 2024 reads.

“The defendant was released by the Courts on August 22, 2022,” the affidavit reads. “The defendant was instructed by the courts to obey all laws and to follow the courts and Close Street Supervision conditions. One of Close Street Supervision conditions is [a] weekly check-in via phone. The defendant has failed to do so since July 24, 2024. Multiple attempts have been made to contact the defendant, but all have been unsuccessful.”

A new hearing for Reder’s case is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. Wednesday.
