Rare Bob Dylan Typewritten Lyric Just Fetched $508K For One Song

Mr. Tambourine Man play a song for me — and fetch a whole lot of money!

The iconic Bob Dylan, now 83-years-old, is experiencing a surge in popularity following the release of A Complete Unknown, a film telling the story of his rise to superstardom. According to ABC News, two pages of old typewritten paper of lyrics to one of his most famous songs, "Mr. Tambourine Man," have sold at auction for $508,000.

The yellowed sheets contained three typewritten versions of the song's lyrics – notably not including the final, record version. They do have Dylan's handwritten notes in the margins.

Nearly 60 items related to the songwriter were included in the Julien's Auctions sale in Nashville, Tenn. Music sheets, photos, a guitar, an oil painting, and more all changed hands.

Nearly $1.5 million was made from overall sales, Julien's Auctions noted. The collection was a personal one of the late music journalist Al Aronowitz.

According to writings by Aronowitz, Dylan wrote the lyrics at home sitting at his "white formica breakfast bar in a swirl of chain-lit cigarette smoke, his bony, long-nailed fingers tapping the words out."

"Mr. Tambourine Man" is the eighth track on Dylan's masterful 1965 album Bringing It All Back Home.

Other items of note sold at the Julien's Auctions sale included a denim jacket worn by the musician, a custom 1983 Fender guitar, and a signed oil-on-canvas painting which fetched $260,000.

A Complete Unknown, directed by James Mangold stars Timothée Chalamet as Dylan, along with Ed Norton, Elle Fanning, and Monica Barbaro. The movie debuted in December 2024 and has reportedly made $54 million at the box office.

A Complete Unknown is in theaters now.
