Why Brian Kelly's decision to leave Notre Dame for LSU has aged so poorly

LSU head coach Brian Kelly left Notre Dame because he felt like he couldn’t win a national championship there.

Well, the Fighting Irish are a win away from proving him very, very wrong.

Notre Dame playing Ohio State in Monday night’s College Football Playoff national championship game makes Kelly’s decision to leave the school look a lot worse in retrospect.

Kelly hasn’t gotten LSU to the national title game since joining the program for the 2022 season, but his South Bend successor, Marcus Freeman, has the Fighting Irish on the doorstep of a national title.

Kelly probably isn’t petty enough to hope Notre Dame loses on Monday night, but a Notre Dame win sure makes his decision to leave look less sensible.
