Tottenham’s pursuit of midfielder Richard Rios faces financial hurdle
Tottenham Hotspur have now been told how much it will cost if they are to lure Richard Rios away from Palmeiras in the January transfer window.
Tottenham linked with Palmeiras midfielder Richard Rios
If you have been following Spurs Web coverage, you will be aware that Ange Postecoglou‘s side have expressed an interest in signing Richard Rios from Brazilian club Palmeiras.
Earlier reports have suggested that Tottenham Hotspur already made an initial offer for Richard Rios; however, it was swiftly rejected by Palmeiras.
Despite the setback, Rios’ agent has remained open to the possibility of a move, indicating that the door has not been entirely closed.
Intriguingly, it has also emerged that Tottenham are not the only Premier League club monitoring the situation, as both Everton and Nottingham Forest are reportedly keen on securing the Colombian’s services.
Tottenham must meet $20m price tag to secure Richard Rios
According to Caracol Radio and AS Colombia, Tottenham Hotspur will need to submit an offer of at least $20m (£16.4m) if they are to have any hope of signing Richard Ríos during this transfer window.
Palmeiras are reportedly willing to negotiate; however, they have made it clear that their financial demands must be met before they entertain discussions with potential suitors.
According to the reports, the minimum price to start negotiations is $20m, emphasising that Palmeiras are not desperate to sell and will only consider offers that meet their expectations.
Complicating matters further is the release clause embedded in Ríos’ contract, which is said to be worth €100m (£82m).
The report states that the release clause is an obstacle that Premier League clubs, including Tottenham, are unlikely to overcome in the winter unless a significantly lower fee is negotiated.
The challenges for Tottenham
Reports from AS suggest that Palmeiras are closely monitoring the situation, as they remain aware of the growing interest in their star player.
However, the club has no intention of letting Ríos leave on the cheap. The midfielder’s contract, which runs until 2028, provides a strong position for Palmeiras in any potential negotiation, and the release clause serves as an additional deterrent.
The interest from Everton and Nottingham Forest complicates Tottenham’s pursuit further, as competition could drive up the price.
However, given that neither club is likely to meet the €100m release clause, any negotiations will depend heavily on whether Palmeiras are willing to compromise.
