American department store retail chain Kohl’s is closing 27 of its locations in the US by April 2025.

The 27 stores across 15 states are an ‘underperforming’ bunch among the more than 1,150 locations nationwide, the company stated last Thursday.

‘While Kohl’s continues to believe in the health and strength of its profitable store base, these specific locations were underperforming stores,’ it stated.

Additionally, Kohl’s is shuttering its e-commerce distribution center in San Bernardino, California, when the lease for the facility expires in May. It is one of the company’s 15 e-commerce fulfillment centers.

‘We always take these decisions very seriously,’ stated Kohl’s CEO Tom Kingsbury.

‘As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams.’

All store associates have been notified and offered opportunities to apply for other roles within the company, or competitive severance packages.

‘Kohl’s thanks our associates for their work and is working to support our associates during this transition,’ stated the company.

The decision is one of the last to be made by Kingsbury, who stepped down from his role on Wednesday.

Kohl’s stock has tumbled almost 40% over the past six months.

Affected stores include 10 in California and two each in Illinois, Ohio, and Virginia.

The Kohl’s announcement came on the same day that another department store giant, Macy’s, confirmed it will close 66 locations across 22 US states this year.
