WATCH: Prithvi Shaw reveals ‘unforgettable’ memory with ‘friend’ Arjun Tendulkar

New Delhi: The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) began its 50th-anniversary celebrations earlier this week at Wankhede Stadium, featuring a significant ceremony to honor former captains of the Mumbai cricket team. Preparations are currently underway for the event scheduled for January 19, which will bring together many of Mumbai’s past and present cricket stars.

Prithvi Shaw, the Mumbai opener who gained recognition as a young talent and played a key role in India’s U19 World Cup victory in 2018, reflected on his experiences at Wankhede Stadium in anticipation of the upcoming celebrations. He recalled his initial visit to the stadium during the 2011 World Cup final, where the Indian team, captained by MS Dhoni, triumphed over Sri Lanka by six wickets to secure the prestigious trophy.

Shaw was present at the match alongside his acquaintance Arjun Tendulkar, the son of the iconic Sachin Tendulkar, who was included in the playing XI for the final. Arjun is currently involved in domestic cricket with Goa and plays for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL.

“My first memory that I remember, and it’s for the rest of my life, was when I came here to watch the 2011 World Cup. I was 11 that time; me and Arjun Tendulkar, my friend, we both sat here and watched that game live. I still remember the moment when we lifted that World Cup. What an experience. That was my first time,” Shaw said.

“As kids, we always dreamed about playing in Wankhede Stadium. We are now celebrating 50th anniversary of Mumbai Cricket Association, and I think everyone should come and join the celebrations. It’s for all the Mumbai people. Please come on 19th and have a big celebration,” he added.

The young opener has experienced a challenging 2024, struggling to perform in domestic cricket. Shaw’s ongoing disciplinary problems have affected his position in the Mumbai XI, leading to his removal from the Ranji Trophy squad during the current season.

Shaw faced difficulties in delivering strong performances for the Delhi Capitals and was ultimately let go by the team. To make matters worse, he went unsold during the IPL Auction held in November.
