Will Tottenham make any big-money acquisitions in January?

Tottenham have historically not been big spenders in January, with the club tending to make most of their big acquisitions during the summer.

That is in line with how most clubs operate, given that it is often very difficult to get top players in the January window as teams are hesitant to let their best players leave mid-season.

It has been reported over recent weeks that Spurs’ focus this window will be on adding quantity rather than quality, with Ange Postecoglou wanting to bulk up his squad by adding reinforcements across the pitch.

Jamie O’Hara urges Tottenham to prioritise starters

However, O’Hara believes that the club are in desperate need of improvements to their starting eleven and suggested that they should look to sign readymade players such as the Dominic Solanke deal in the summer.

The former Spurs midfielder remarked that the likes of James Maddison, Brennan Johnson, and even captain Heung-min Son could be relegated to the bench if Tottenham bring in the right players.

O’Hara told Grosvenor Sport: “Tottenham need to bring in players in January who can genuinely challenge for a spot in the starting eleven.

“Look at Dominic Solanke—he’s come in and made an impact, he’s playing regularly, and he’s improving. Too many of the other signings haven’t had that same effect. If you look at the starting eleven, it’s still largely made up of players who were at the club last season.

“Tottenham need signings who will put real pressure on the starters. If someone like James Maddison or Brennan Johnson isn’t performing, they should be at risk of being dropped to the bench.

“Spurs need players who are good enough to be starting, not just filling out the squad. If they sign the right players, even someone like Heung-min Son could find himself on the bench. That’s the level of quality they should be aiming for.”

Demarcation between squad players and starters is not clear

While one can understand O’Hara’s point, the reality is that youngsters, who are signed as squad players, are capable of forcing themselves into the starting eleven.

Antonin Kinsky is a good example as even though he might have not been signed to replace Guglielmo Vicario as the number one, he could well end up doing that in due course.

Lucas Bergvall, who was also signed as one for the future, has arguably done well enough to be a starter for Spurs now, while it might not be too long before we see Archie Gray also force himself into Tottenham’s best eleven.

If we asked Postecoglou and Johan Lange, they would likely tell us that all players that the club signs are seen as potential starters.
