2025 Producers Guild Awards nominations: ‘Wicked’ and ‘The Brutalist’ in, ‘Nickel Boys’ and ‘Sing Sing’ out

0

The Producers Guild of America anointed Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, A Real Pain, September 5, The Substance, and Wicked as its contenders for Best Picture on Thursday, solidifying those films Oscar hopes. The guild announcement came six days later than originally planned due to the devastating Los Angeles wildfires.

The PGA Awards are arguably the most consequential industry awards for predicting the Oscar for Best Picture. Lke the Oscars, the PGA nominates 10 films for the prize and decide its winners using a ranked-choice preferential ballot. Since the PGA started giving out its award in 1989, the guild have disagreed with the Oscars only 10 times. And since the Oscars and PGA expanded the number of Best Picture nominees in 2009, the two groups have differed on only three occasions. PGA picked The Big Short as the best film of 2015, while the Academy chose Spotlight. Then PGA selected La La Land for 2016, while the Academy went with Moonlight. And PGA rated 1917 as the best of 2019, while the Academy decided it was Parasite.

One thing’s for sure: if you want to win the Best Picture Oscar, you’d better at least be nominated by the PGA. In the history of the guild’s awards, only one Oscar winner ever missed a nomination: Braveheart (1995). So we’re almost certain to find the Academy’s ultimate choice among the 10 PGA selections that were just announced.

However, it’s rare that the full slate of PGA nominees line up with the Oscar nominees. Last year all 10 PGA contenders received Oscar noms for Best Picture. For 2022, seven of the nominees overlapped; of those that differed, PGA chose Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Glass Onion, and The Whale, which the Academy replaced with Women Talking, Triangle of Sadness, and All Quiet on the Western Front. And for 2021, eight of the 10 nominees matched; PGA’s picks Being the Ricardos and Tick, Tick… Boom! were switched out for Drive My Car and Nightmare Alley at the Oscars.

So while Oscar hopefuls Nickel Boys and Sing Sing both missed the PGA cut, there is a slim chance one or both might still make the Oscar list when nominations are announced Jan. 23.
