Debate heating up over possible Coney Island casino

CONEY ISLAND, Brooklyn (PIX11) -- Coney Island is a place known for games and amusements.

A debate about a possible casino in the neighborhood is heating up.

The state of New York could award three downstate casino licenses near the end of 2025. Applications are due by the summer.

Developers and the property owner have proposed a site on 5 acres in Coney Island.

The fire breathing at Coney Island USA is not the hottest topic in the neighborhood.

"We knew there was a land grab going on. We didn’t know it will come down to this," said Adam Rinn, the artistic director for Coney Island USA.

The developer has submitted plans to reclassify some areas, including remapping some streets, which could possibly pave the way for a casino.

The local community board has the first vote on the local zoning issue, followed by the New York City Council.

"It's the scale of it and changing the fundamental reasons of why you come down here," said Brooklyn resident and tour guide Ed Dutchmazz.

Neighbors are getting organized.

"Nobody moves to an area to see a big casino building. They move for natural beauty," said Kouichi Shirayanagi, who lives in Coney Island.

The property owner and supporters say a casino, convention center and hotel would have a year-round, economic impact for business and residents.

Robert Cornegy is a former New York City Council member and spokesperson for the project.

"Imagine being able to create a structure that has union jobs for construction, and also jobs that will improve the quality of life," Cornegy said.

Developers propose a fund to cover boardwalk and infrastructure improvements.

The Coney Island USA stage and bar are next to the proposed site.

"There’s a lot right across the street that’s vacant and rat-infested for 10 years. They could’ve done something during that time. Now don’t say now you’re going to give money," Rinn added.

Artist Danielle Mastrion has created many murals around Coney Island. She doesn’t see the casino as a fit.

"Keep the traditions of Coney Island alive, which focus on the arts, shows and performers,” Mastrion said.

The land use committee of Community Board 13 meets Wednesday with a full board vote expected next week on the request.

A state gaming board will award official downstate casino licenses, which also have to meet local zoning rules. Community input and hearings will continue.

About a dozen sites have been mentioned as possible locations, including Citi Field, Hudson Yards, Times Square and along First Avenue near 40th Street.
