'A real contradiction': Ex-prosecutor flags Trump nominee's curious answers to avoid 'lie'

Pam Bondi’s refusal on Wednesday to admit under oath that Donald Trump lost the 2020 election is a double-edged sword that could signal future trouble for the former Florida attorney general, according to CNN’s Elie Honig.

“What Pam Bondi said today is a little bit different than what she showed us,” Honig, a senior legal analyst for the network, said during an interview on “The Source.”

Honig made the assessment hours after Bondi appeared on Capitol Hill for her Senate confirmation hearing and expressed his skepticism over her claim that she would act independently from Trump if confirmed as the country’s next attorney general.

“I saw a real contradiction there,” Honig said. “She said all the things that every attorney general nominee has said and must say throughout the years, I’ll be independent, I’ll make my own judgments.”

But on the other hand, the former federal prosecutor told viewers, “she still refused to say Donald Trump lost the 2020 election.”

He pointed out that the reason that issue has remained a sticking point and causes “tension” is because of the pickle created by her attempt to have it both ways.

“She knows she can't say that because, No. 1, she had claimed that Donald Trump did win the 2020 election – she would be admitting she lied,” Honig said. “And No. 2, let's face it, she knows she can't remain loyal to Donald Trump if she says that.”

Honig continued: “And so, her refusal to say that – she's a smart woman she knows the truth – shows me that under it all, she still has this allegiance to Donald Trump that's somewhat in conflict with her rhetoric about independence.”

Still, Honig concluded that Bondi would receive the amount of votes she needs in the GOP-controlled Congress to sail through her confirmation process, and concluded “we'll see how that actually plays out when she's at the helm of DOJ – and she will be.”
