Rare ski patroller strike at largest resort in US causes long lines and closes terrain

0
A rare labor strike that began over the busy holidays and carried on into the new year has put a wrench in operations at the biggest U.S. ski resort. Utah's Park City Mountain Resort closed lifts and runs. More than 200 union ski patrollers went on strike on Dec. 27. They're seeking a base-pay increase from $21 to $23 an hour. They have accused the company of unfair bargaining. Park City owner Vail Resorts says it already has been generous with a 50% pay increase two years ago. Patrollers maintain safety at ski resorts by monitoring terrain, responding to accidents, hauling hurt skiers downhill and reducing avalanche risk.
