Feral Coyote Invades Supermarket, Evades Capture in Wild Video

0

Grocery shoppers suffered a memorable shock on Monday morning when a wild coyote wandered into an Aldi supermarket in the Humboldt Park suburb of Chicago, leaving police officers to evacuate the hairy trespasser.

A clip posted to social media shows a brazen police officer using a broomstick to poke the coyote through the produce shelf, behind which it was hiding. As the cop reaches his arm deep into the cooler, a wary store employee looks on from a distance. “Look out, look out!” an off-camera customer yells as the officer violently pulls the coyote by its tail through the shelf. The spooked animal swiftly escapes the cop’s grasp, snapping its jaws as the cameraman wisely backs up. Luckily for the onlookers, the coyote immediately disappeared again into a display of fancy cheeses.

The Chicago Tribune reported that the coyote was summarily taken into custody by police and handed over to animal control around 10 a.m. local time. "The animal is currently at our facility awaiting transfer to our wildlife rehabilitation partner, Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation," a Chicago Animal Control and Care spokesperson told NBC Chicago in a statement. "The coyote appears uninjured, but Flint Creek will conduct an assessment to confirm its health before releasing it back into the wild if deemed appropriate."

According to witnesses, the wily coyote was plotting his trespass for some time, pacing the parking lot before finally entering Aldi. Since coyote mating season occurs from January through March, increased sightings during these months aren't uncommon. But sightings in the produce aisle are. While it’s possible the coyote went cheese shopping in anticipation of a romantic evening with its mate, Stan Gehrt of the Cook County Coyote Project said the creature may not have even realized it was entering a supermarket.

"It picked an odd location. They do this sometimes. They make a mistake,” Gehrt told ABC 7 Chicago. “They're trying to avoid us. They're trying to hide from us. Probably [while] trying to find a new area to hide, [it] ended up inside the store,” he explained, adding that “this has happened in the past."

Gehrt then posited a far more tragic scenario than aborted cheese shopping. "Some of these animals, the ones especially that make a mistake and they find themselves into a building, often are what we call transient animals, so these are animals that actually don't have a mate yet," he said. As one sensitive social media user summed up the episode, “Leave it alone! You don’t know what it’s going through!!”

Coyotes do not generally pose a threat to humans, but if you come across one in the wild (or at Aldi) it's best to keep your distance and leave it alone. If one does approach you, do not run away. Stand your ground by making eye contact and loud noises, appearing large, waving your arms, and throwing objects in their direction.
