Comoros holds a parliamentary election boycotted by some opposition parties

Comoros is holding a parliamentary election that some opposition leaders have pledged to boycott. They accuse President Azali Assoumani and his ruling party of adopting an increasingly authoritarian stance and have raised concerns over the integrity of the vote. The one-day election on Sunday will decide the 33 seats in the legislature. Results are expected next week. Around 330,000 people out of a population of 850,000 are registered to vote. Comoros is an archipelago of three islands off the east coast of Africa. It has been beset by a series of military coups since gaining independence from France in 1975.
