Afghanistan declared largest buyer of Russian Flour in 2024
The Federal Center for Export of Agricultural Products in Russia reported an increase in wheat exports to Afghanistan. In 2024, Russia exported wheat flour worth $80 million to Afghanistan.
Agroexport, a center under the Russian Ministry of Agriculture, announced on Saturday, January 11, that Afghanistan was the largest buyer of Russian flour in 2024. Afghanistan’s domestic production cannot meet the population’s needs, making the country reliant on imported food products, including flour.
According to the center, Russian exports from January to July 2024 increased by 38% compared to the same period last year, reaching over 740,000 tons of wheat and flour exports.
The report highlighted that factors such as war and instability have severely affected wheat and grain production in Afghanistan. Many Afghan citizens rely on agriculture and livestock for their livelihood, but international organizations have warned of severe droughts impacting the country.
Previously, Russia’s agricultural export center estimated that wheat flour exports to Afghanistan amounted to approximately $60 million annually. However, countries like Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Turkey, China, Turkmenistan, and Pakistan are recognized as Russia’s main competitors in this market.
Agroexport further stated that Russian wheat and rye flour exports could exceed $440 million by 2030, indicating a significant growth trajectory.
The increase in Russian flour exports highlights Afghanistan’s growing dependence on external food supplies due to domestic agricultural challenges. As war, incompetent government, instability, and droughts continue to impact food security, international collaboration and sustainable agricultural solutions are essential to address Afghanistan’s pressing needs and reduce its reliance on imports.
