‘Awards Magnet’ mailbag: Fernanda Torres in? Cynthia Erivo top two? And more Best Actress scenarios

0

Is Fernanda Torres safe for an Oscar nomination now? Is Cynthia Erivo as high as second in the Best Actress race? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to answer your burning questions of the week on Awards Magnet.

Since her upset Best Drama Actress win at the Golden Globes for I’m Still Here, Torres has cracked the Best Actress Oscar top five, rising from eighth place in the odds. Normally, the Globe drama winner would be a shoo-in for the Oscar nomination, but this is a weird year in which the top Best Actress contenders are all on the Globes’ comedy/musical side in probable Best Picture nominees. The drama hopefuls are rather weak, and some could be lone nominees. Torres likely wouldn’t be one as I’m Still Here looks solid for a spot in the international feature lineup. She also has master campaigner Sony Pictures Classics behind her. Is that enough to overcome someone like Marianne Jean-Baptiste, another passion pick potential nominee and the trifecta critics sweeper?

Meanwhile, Wicked had a great Wednesday, leading the Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations with five bids. Given that and Anora going 0-5 at the Globes, one listener posits that Erivo, not Mikey Madison, might be in second place in the Best Actress race behind Globe champ Demi Moore. However, Anora rebounded from that shutout with its own SAG over-performance (three nominations) and secured the expected Directors Guild of America Award nomination for Sean Baker. Wicked helmer Jon M. Chu, meanwhile, missed.
