Cloudy with a chance of snow: DC region goes into the weekend with light ‘dusting’

0

While much of the region is still battling through the sloshy aftermath of Monday’s snowstorm, the cold, windy weather is here to stay Friday and through the weekend.

Much of Friday will remain partly to mostly cloudy, with highs only reaching the mid-30s, according to 7News First Alert Chief Meteorologist Veronica Johnson, who said snow is definitely in our future.

But, fear not, D.C. residents — it won’t be anything like the first major storm of the year.

Latest forecasts indicate snow showers will hit the D.C. area starting at 11 p.m. and run until 7 a.m. on Saturday. Snow totals are expected to be around an inch.

“It’s really more of a dusting and nothing, like, of course, the last big storm system that we had,” Johnson said.

Of Saturday’s somewhat warmer 40-degree temperatures, Johnson said, “so much of that is going to be melting off the roads.”

Make sure to stay bundled up, though, as 30-mph winds gusts are set to engulf the D.C. area.

Come Sunday, it’ll be all about the sunshine, with highs staying in the lower to mid-30s.

FORECAST

FRIDAY:
Morning sun then cloudy
Highs: 32-36
Winds: Northwest 5-10
Another frigid morning with air temperatures in the teens and 20s. Morning breezes will ease, so it should feel better outdoors compared to yesterday. High temperatures will remain well below average, but at least most neighborhoods are forecast to climb above freezing this afternoon. Morning sun will fade behind the clouds, as our next weather maker approaches bringing a chance for light snow.

FRIDAY NIGHT:
Snow showers
Lows: 24-39
Winds: Light
Areas of light snow will develop from west to east after 9 p.m. Snow showers are expected to begin 10 p.m. to midnight in D.C. with light snow falling through the overnight hours. Snow will taper off from west to east before sunrise Saturday (7: 26 a.m.). A fresh coating of snow is expected with a dusting to 1.5″ likely.

SATURDAY:
Morning clouds to sun
Highs: 35-40
Winds: Northwest 5-15, Gusts to 20 mph
Watch for slick and snow covered streets early in the morning. Morning clouds will give way to sunshine for your Saturday afternoon with highs in the upper 30s to low 40s in our south and western zones.

SUNDAY:
Sunny and cold
Highs: 35-40
Winds: Northwest 5-10 mph
It will be a sunny and cold end to the weekend with highs back into the upper 30s. Fortunately, winds will be light, so we won’t be wind-chilled.

NEXT WEEK:
Monday will feature highs in the low to mid-40s, which is where temperatures should be for this time of year. It will certainly feel better after a full week of highs in the 30s. Make the most of it because another arctic airmass will settle in starting Tuesday with highs in the 20s and 30s through midweek.
