Patriots Rumors: What Robert Kraft Told Players In Meeting After Jerod Mayo Firing
Robert Kraft met with Patriots players at Gillette Stadium on Monday morning, less than 24 hours after the longtime owner fired first-year head coach Jerod Mayo.
“Pretty much to move on to 2025,” Patriots captain Deatrich Wise said in the locker room when asked about ownership’s message to players.
There was a bit more to it than that, though.
In an in-depth story on the Patriots’ 2024 campaign, the Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan and Doug Kyed offered intel into what Kraft told the group in the closed-door meeting.
“Two sources inside the room said Kraft admitted he had rushed to hire Mayo,” the Boston Herald wrote. “Kraft intimated he had set Mayo up to fail, and by extension his players and the franchise. Kraft also promised to learn from his mistake in the coming days, when he would search for his third head coach in as many years and begin again.”
Kraft admitted fault publicly, as well.
“This whole situation is on me,” he said during a press conference shortly after speaking to players. “I feel terrible for Jerod because I put him in an untenable situation.”
The franchise now is moving forward, as Wise expressed.
The Patriots started their interview process the day after Kraft met with players, bringing in Byron Leftwich and Pep Hamilton for head coaching interviews. New England reportedly will interview Mike Vrabel on Thursday and Ben Johnson on Friday.
