Final suspect arrested in St. Landry Parish murder

OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY) -- The last of five people wanted in connection with the murder of Kendrick Lewis in Opelousas is in custody, authorities said.

Marques Malik Sonnier, 18, of Opelousas, has turned himself in to authorities, according to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office. Sonnier is charged with second degree murder, illegal use of weapons or other dangerous instrumentalities, two counts of aggravated criminal property damage, failure to report certain felonies, failure to seek assistance and four counts of contributing to the delinquency of juveniles.

Lewis, 24, was found shot in the area of Honey Lane on Dec. 28.

Previously, four other suspects, Joshua Lastrapes, Jasana Broussard, Drake Pickney and Drakelyn Pickney, were taken into custody.

Major Mark LeBlanc with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office said through a team effort with the Criminal Investigation and Juvenile Detectives, arrests were made of Drake and Drakelyn Pickney while they were at school. Less than 24 hours later Lastrapes and Broussard would surrender themselves to the sheriff's office.

LeBlanc said the incident was the result of a social media conflict that was resolved with firearms.

In a statement, St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said the shootings, and others like it, stem from a lack of supervision.

"Threatening communication over social media speaks volumes on the underlying issues in our society that young people choose to solve their problems with devastating violence, shows the complete lack of a responsible, reasonable and prudent authority in their lives."
