US renews Memorandum for Afghan allies’ relocation

0

Antony Blinken, the U.S. Secretary of State, announced that the memorandum of understanding (MoU) for supporting Afghan allies has been renewed.

On Wednesday, January 8th, Blinken shared on his X/ Twitter account that the MoU has been renewed for the relocation of individuals who worked with U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

The U.S. Secretary of State stated, “We have renewed our cooperation agreement with ‘afghanevac’ to continue our vital partnership for relocating and resettling Afghan allies who stood with the U.S. for over 20 years.”

Blinken emphasized that the U.S. remains committed to supporting Afghan allies and standing alongside its partners in this mission.

This announcement comes after the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Afghan Allies Protection Act last December, which includes provisions for relocating Afghan partners to the U.S.

Thousands of Afghan security forces who previously collaborated with the U.S. are still facing widespread threats from the Taliban in Afghanistan, despite the passage of the law.

The U.S. State Department has resettled over 183,000 at-risk Afghans and their families since the Taliban’s takeover. However, thousands of Afghans are still awaiting their visas, either in Afghanistan or in third countries.

The situation for many former Afghan allies remains precarious, as the Taliban’s reign continues to target those associated with the previous government and U.S. forces. Continued international efforts, including the U.S. memorandum, are essential for ensuring their safety and future stability.
