Fire hydrants ran dry in California, highlighting a major problem in firefighting

Some Los Angeles fire hydrants have run dry as demand soared for water to quell wildfires that broke out across the county. Water is flowing into the system, but the demand far outpaces how quickly pipes and tanks can replenish. At the same time, burned buildings leak water from destroyed pipes, further bleeding the system. As wildfires become increasingly common occurrences in urban areas like in Boulder, Colorado and Lahaina, Hawaii, municipal water systems, which supply hydrants, continue to fail under the pressure from large fires in dense areas.
