Jupiter and Io

Photographer: John ChumackSummary Author: John Chumack

In mid-September, when Jupiter again cleared my neighbor's trees, I capture this image from my backyard observatory in Dayton, Ohio. It shows our solar system's largest planet with its Great Red Spot and one of the 4 Galilean Moons, volcanic Io. Seeing conditions were about average at best, so I'm pleased with how this image turned out. Photo taken on September 16, 2024, at 3:59 a.m. local time.

Photo Details: C-11 telescope; Bisque mount; QHY462mc Cmos Camera; ADC, 2x Barlow Lens; 7.3 second exposure; stacked 2,710 out of 8,500 video frames. I used Fire-Capture Software, Astrosurface, Registax6, and Adobe Raw CC 2025.
