Former Kentucky juvenile detention chief resigned after investigation

The former superintendent of a Kentucky juvenile detention center that was the site of a riot resigned in December. A newspaper report says Tonya R. Burton failed to conduct mental exams and wrongly accused a teen of getting a handcuff key from a guard before she resigned. A riot at the facility caused injuries to young people and staff in 2022. The incident and others at state juvenile facilities prompted a Department of Justice probe in May. Personnel records obtained by the Lexington Herald-Leader say Burton was due to be fired in November, but instead resigned last month.
