Body cameras added to security staff at West Ridge Mall.

TOPEKA (KSNT) - West Ridge Mall is increasing safety efforts this year with the addition of body cameras to its security staff.

27 News reached out to West Ridge Mall Manager Casey Richardson who said each of the security guards inside the building are now equipped with body cameras. This addition was made in an effort to maintain transparency and enhance safety for mall patrons.

"Security is our top priority at West Ridge Mall, and we are continuously working to enhance the safety and comfort of our tenants, guests, and staff," Richardson said. "We partner with Vanguard Elite Security, owned by Kip Walker, to ensure 24/7 professional coverage. They provide two security guards at all times—365 days a year, including holidays and severe weather."

Richardson said this move is part of larger efforts to increase safety for people visiting the mall in 2025. Newer security cameras have been installed in the mall along with badge access systems for its guards.

"These measures represent the first phase of a comprehensive 1-2 year plan to make West Ridge Mall a safe, welcoming environment for everyone," Richardson said.

The Topeka Police Department (TPD) and other local law enforcement agencies are also partnering with mall security staff to make it safer for guests and can watch live feeds from each camera in real time. The new updates are also expected to help mall security protect businesses against thefts.

"These upgrades allow us to identify and track known shoplifters and enforce bans when necessary," Richardson said. "We also increase security presence during high-traffic periods and events, often partnering with undercover officers and off-duty TPD and Sheriff’s deputies."

West Ridge Mall sold in September 2023 to Advisors Excel which is set to move some of its offices into the building. The company, headed by Cody Foster and David Callanan, plans to reimagine the old mall in the years to come.
