In Cincinnati, roller rink provides warmth and shelter from nation's Arctic blast
About 200 people, many homeless, are seeking daytime shelter at Over-The-Rhine Recreation Center in Cincinnati as sub-freezing temperatures grip much of the nation. At night, buses arrived to take them to overnight shelters to avoid even colder temperatures that can quickly lead to frostbite and death. Cincinnati Recreation Commission Assistant Director Dave Harris says other centers also are extending their daytime hours for those who need a warm place, food and transportation to overnight lodging. He says without the shelters, many would "probably be out on the streets facing the elements.”
