Preps of the week: Marin players show out at Ionescu Showcase

Several of the top girls basketball teams from Marin competed at the Sabrina Ionescu Showcase this past week with players from Marin Catholic, Branson, and Redwood earning Game MVP honors during the event.

On the boys’ side, San Rafael continued to pile up results in the preseason while both San Marin and San Domenico picked up victories.

It was a quiet week for soccer but the Tam and Branson girls both rung up 4-0 wins.

Kitty White and Maya Saibel, Redwood girls basketball

Redwood went 1-1 at the Sabrina Ionescu Showcase, highlighted by an 81-37 victory against McNair on Friday. White was the Game MVP with 22 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. Saibel chipped in with 18 points for the Giants.

Brooke Spagnuolo and Izzy McFadden, Marin Catholic girls basketball

Both Wildcats broke 20 points in games this past week as MC went 2-1, including a pair of wins at the Sabrina Ionescu Showcase. Spagnuolo scored 23 points in a 61-48 loss to San Ramon Valley on Thursday. McFadden took Game MVP honors the next night as MC defeated Pinole Valley 47-29 in a Showcase game. McFadden scored 25 more points on Saturday in a 61-40 win over Granada while Cecelia Biernat took Game MVP honors.

Paige Macy and Avery Myerberg, Branson girls basketball

Macy and Myerberg both enjoyed big games as Branson went 2-0 in its games at the Sabrina Ionescu Showcase. Myerberg made six 3-pointers in the first half on Friday and outscored Dougherty Valley by herself, pouring in 28 points while earning Game MVP honors in a 50-23 victory. Macy stepped up in the second game, snagging the Game MVP award with 13 points and 18 rebounds as the Bulls held off Campolindo 35-31.

Gio Brovelli and Luke Shapiro, San Rafael boys basketball

Brovelli achieved a career milestone this past week by scoring his 1,000th point in a 77-51 victory against De Anza on Thursday. Brovelli scored 22 points to pace the Bulldogs while Shapiro added 21 points and five rebounds. Shapiro paced the Bulldogs on Friday with 22 points in a 54-51 win against Lowell. Brovelli scored 16 in that game. Brovelli was back at it again on Saturday, pouring in 21 of his game-high 28 points in the second half of a 72-57 victory against Marin Academy. Shapiro again was not far behind with 23 points for San Rafael.

Grant Means, San Marin boys basketball

Means had a strong all-around game with 21 points, six rebounds, five steals, and three assists in a 69-60 win against Encinal on Saturday.

Kris Jakstas, San Domenico boys basketball

Jakstas scored a game-high 22 points as the Panthers wrapped up their preseason schedule with an 82-31 victory against South Fork on Friday. San Domenico opens league play with a rivalry game against Marin Academy on Wednesday.

Lauren Willard and Addie Covey, Tam girls soccer

The Red-tailed Hawks duo was unstoppable during a 4-0 victory against Montgomery on Saturday, combining to do all of the scoring and most of the assisting. Willard scored the first two goals and assisted on the last two — both of which were scored by Covey. Willard’s second goal was assisted by Covey and her first was assisted by Madeline Michelson.

Catrin Howell, Branson girls soccer

Howell set up the first goal for the Bulls then scored the third during a 4-0 win against St. Mary’s on Saturday. Howell helped get Branson on the board on the 20th minute, assisting on Riley Pearson’s goal. Howell’s goal came in the 62nd minute on a pass from Sophia Duran.
