Insecurity in Pakistan: Islamabad vows to eliminate Terrorism

0

Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, emphasized mobilizing the nation’s forces to eradicate terrorism as reports of unprecedented insecurity in the country emerge.

On Friday, January 3, Shehbaz Sharif stated that the Pakistani government would identify and eliminate any terrorist threats. He indirectly referred to Pakistan’s airstrikes in the Barmal district of eastern Afghanistan, describing them as a “resounding response” to the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

During a meeting in Islamabad, the Prime Minister made strong statements about eliminating what he described as “terrorist threats from across the border.” Other Pakistani officials have echoed these sentiments, urging the Taliban government in Afghanistan to choose between supporting the TTP and maintaining relations with Pakistan.

Shehbaz Sharif’s remarks come as Pakistan faces a surge in violence. According to recent reports by Pakistan’s security research institutions, the country experienced its deadliest year in a decade in 2024.

The Center for Research and Security Studies in Pakistan reported on Tuesday, December 31, that at least 685 Pakistani forces were killed in 444 militant attacks during 2024.

These figures indicate that 2024 was the “deadliest year” for Pakistan’s military over the past nine years. The data also reveals that 1,612 people, including security personnel and civilians, lost their lives in violent attacks.

The report further states that violence in Pakistan increased by 66% in 2024 compared to the previous year, with a total of 2,267 people injured in violent incidents.

A significant portion of the violent incidents occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, where Pakistan’s military has focused most of its counterterrorism operations. The escalation in these regions highlights the critical challenges the country faces in combating insurgency.

The resurgence of violence in Pakistan underscores the complex security challenges the nation continues to face. Despite repeated military operations, the rising number of casualties and attacks points to the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to address both domestic and cross-border threats.

The ongoing violence not only impacts Pakistan’s internal security but also strains its relations with neighboring Afghanistan. Coordinated regional efforts and diplomatic engagement may prove essential in addressing the root causes of terrorism and fostering long-term stability.
