Sports Briefs: Marin squads in spotlight with SI20 victories
Avery Myerberg carried a big load as she scored 28 points in the Branson School’s 50-23 victory over Dougherty Valley during Friday’s first day of the Sabrina Ionesco Showcase in Concord. The Bulls (7-5) are scheduled to face Carondelet on Saturday.
• Kitty White turned in an MVP-worthy effort with 22 points as Redwood beat McNair, 81-37, on Friday’s opening day of the Sabrina Ionesco Showcase in Concord. White narrowly missed out on a triple-double, with nine rebounds and nine assists. The Giants’ Maya Saibel turned in an 18-point night and Logan Leverte added 11 points. The Giants (6-6) are scheduled to take on Oakland Tech as the showcase continues Saturday.
• Marin Catholic (6-6) beat Pinole Valley, 47-29, during Friday’s first day of the Sabrina Ionesco Showcase in Concord. The Wildcats are scheduled to play Granada on Saturday as the showcase continues.
• Host Bethel edged Tam, 44-41, during Friday’s non-league contest in Vallejo. The Red-tailed Hawks (6-8) will try to snap a four-game skid with their MCAL opener against San Marin on Jan. 10.
Boys basketball
Asher Urban took control of the game down the stretch to lead San Rafael past host Lowell, 54-51, in San Francisco on Friday. Urban scored all 11 of his points in the final 10 minutes of the game while holding Lowell’s leading scorer Jalen Ly scoreless. Will Healy scored his only two points of the game to give the Bulldogs the lead with 8.8 seconds left on the clock. Gio Brovelli iced the game with a pair of free throws. Luke Shapiro led the Bulldogs with 22 points, while Brovelli added 16, and Hayden Aguinagalde battled his way to a team-high seven rebounds.
• San Domenico defeated South Fork in a decisive 82-31 non-league contest on Friday. A 24-5 second quarter ignited the Panthers, who then ran away with the game in the second half. Kris Jakstas led San Domenico with 22 points, including four 3-pointers. Gavin Early finished with 18 points and eight rebounds in only 16 minutes on the court. Ika Jokhadze also had a strong game with nine points and seven assists. San Domenico will kick off its BCL-West calendar against crosstown rival Marin Academy on Wednesday.
• Tam lost a nail-biter at home to Rancho Cotate, 59-57, on Friday. The Red-tailed Hawks (3-10) are scheduled to visit Cardinal Newman on Saturday.
• Jeck Ellis scored 20 points and Dylan Chelew added 13 points as St. Vincent de Paul of Petaluma beat Middletown, 52-44, on Thursday night. The Mustangs (8-4) are scheduled to host Elsie Allen on Wednesday.
Girls soccer
San Marin toppled powerhouse Windsor, 4-2, for the Mustangs’ first win of the season on Friday. In other action, Novato was blanked by Ukiah, 10-0.
Girls wrestling
San Marin sophomore Catania Dekeyrel captured second place at the Girls Contest of Champions in Concord on Friday. Dekeyrel (4-3) was pinned by Stuart Hall’s Siena Bianchi in the 145-pound final.
Mustangs senior Yuritzi Sanchez Zapata (8-4) claimed fifth place at 170 pounds with a pinfall victory over San Lorenzo’s Naila James.
