Republicans Re-Elect Pro-Life Speaker Mike Johnson on First Ballot

0

House Republicans have re-elected pro-life Speaker Mike Johnson on the first ballot after some initial theatrics delayed the vote.

Republican Reps. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Ralph Norman of South Carolina and Keith Self of Texas voted for other members of the House Republican conference for speaker. Massie was the only Republican who had said he would vote against Johnson before the voting began. He backed Republican Rep. Tom Emmer of Minnesota, majority whip of the House Republican conference while Norman supported Republican Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan and Self voted for Republican Florida Rep. Byron Donalds during the first round of voting.

Republican Reps. Chip Roy of Texas, Andy Harris of Maryland, Andrew Clyde of Georgia, Paul Gosar of Arizona, Michael Cloud of Texas and Andy Biggs of Arizona initially skipped voting for Johnson but eventually voted for him before the round was over.

After the first round, Congressmen Self and Norman switched their votes to Johnson, giving him the 218 votes necessary to become Speaker.

Every Democratic member in attendance voted for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

Trump on Monday endorsed Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, R-LA, to retain the gavel for one more term.

“Speaker Mike Johnson is a good, hard working, religious man,” Trump wrote in a post to TRUTH Social. “He will do the right thing, and we will continue to WIN.”

“Mike has my Complete & Total Endorsement,” Trump stated, adding: “MAGA!!!”

Shortly after Trump posted his endorsement message, Johnson thanked him.

“Together, we will quickly deliver on your America First agenda and usher in the new golden age of America,” Johnson told Trump in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “The American people demand and deserve that we waste no time. Let’s get to work!”

The head of a leading pro-life group celebrated Johnson’s victory. Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life, told LifeNews:

National Right to Life congratulates Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) on his election as Speaker of the House of Representatives. Speaker Johnson’s time in Congress and his leadership as House Speaker have shown his ongoing commitment to the right to life. Speaker Johnson has made clear that protecting women and their unborn children will be a priority in the 119th Congress.

National Right to Life also congratulates Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) on his election for Majority Leader, Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) for Majority Whip, Rep. Lisa McClain (R-Mich.) for Republican Conference chairwoman, Rep. Kevin Hern (R-Okla.) for Republican Party Committee chairman and Richard Hudson (R-N.C.) for National Republican Congressional Committee chairman. This team has played a vital role in advancing legislation on the right to life and protecting women and their unborn children. We look forward to working with them in the upcoming Congress.

We look forward to working with the House leadership team led by Speaker Johnson.

Johnson confirmed in a new interview that he wants to defund the Planned Parenthood abortion business.

The Speaker of the House says he’s fully on board with taking away taxpayer dollars from America’s biggest abortion chain, but the House would need the votes to do it. With a very narrow Republican majority and no pro-life Democrats that’s easier said than done.

Still, Johnson said he would like to defund the abortion giant and is working to build the votes to do it. Likely, the only way that can be accompished is via a reconcilation bill — which both the House and Senate can pass on a majority vote margin.
