Man arrested in Thursday Opelousas homicide
OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY) -- A man has been arrested in connection with a Thursday homicide in Opelousas, authorities said.
Joseph Thomas has been arrested and charged with the following:
- Second degree murder
- Three counts of attempted second degree murder
- Illegal use of weapons and dangerous instrumentalities
Police responded to a shooting in the 800 block of Joseph Street at approximately 2 p.m., where officers discovered a Black male suffering from a gunshot wound, authorities said. He was later pronounced dead. The victim's name was not released.
Investigators were told of a second person who had been taken to a local hospital by private vehicle. This person, also suffering from a gunshot wound, remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition, officials said.
Investigators said they identified the residence where the suspect had fled. A search warrant was obtained for a residence in the 800 block of Planters Street. During the search, several people were detained for questioning, police said. Investigators recovered three firearms, one of which is believed to have been used in the commission of the homicide, authorities said.
Police said Thomas confessed to the crime. Bond details were not released.
