Are Spurs prepared to offer Johnstone an exit route from Wolves?

With Guglielmo Vicario out with an injury and the Tottenham coaching staff reportedly unconvinced about Fraser Forster, the club are said to be on the lookout for a new goalkeeper this month.

It emerged on Thursday that the Lilywhites may look to sign Sam Johnstone on a loan deal from Wolves.

The 31-year-old moved to the Molineux Stadium from Crystal Palace in the summer but has been an understudy to Jose Sa, and it was revealed that the Midlands club are ready to let the Englishman leave the club this month.

Contradictory updates on Tottenham’s Johnstone pursuit

Paul O Keefe, who regularly breaks news on the developments at Hotspur Way, has now confirmed that Johnstone is a ‘strong candidate’ for Spurs in their goalkeeper search.

He claimed that the experienced goalkeeper is one of the ‘leading contenders’ to arrive at N17 as Guglielmo Vicario‘s understudy.

However, Alasdair Gold has a slightly different take on the matter, explaining that while Tottenham had held long-term interest in Johnstone, the deal is not expected to progress this month.

Wolves would not be keen on loaning out Johnstone

The idea that Wolves would loan out their number two to a fellow Premier League and leave themselves short in the goalkeeping department makes little sense.

There is no incentive for Vitor Pereira’s men to loan out Johnstone, particularly since he is on a modest £40,000 per week contract.

One suspects that if Spurs want to sign the former Palace man, they will have to pay a transfer fee and secure him permanently or propose a loan deal with an obligation to buy.
