Buckeye fans celebrate Rose Bowl win, anticipate national championship

0

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- The Ohio State Buckeyes dominated over top-seed Oregon in the Rose Bowl, and Buckeye fans are feeling on top of the world.

The Buckeyes are on their way to the college football playoff semifinals. Fans said they're proud of the team for turning things around since the devastating loss against Michigan.

Block O is the official student section of Ohio State Athletics. President, Gabi Cicerini, said it's always been 'Ohio against the world'.

"As soon as I saw the style of play and the tenacity that we were showing on both sides of the ball, we knew it was over from the beginning," Cicerini said.

Ohio State handed Oregon its first loss of the season in dominant fashion Wednesday night. Adam Smith, Block O's football director, said it was fun to watch the game in person.

"You don't want to completely be like, hey, we just won the Rose Bowl at the end of the first half because there's still half an hour left to play at a football game," Smith said. "But it was really hard to regulate your emotions in that moment when you come out firing like that."

Smith traveled to Pasadena, California on the OSU Student Life Bowl Tour. He said his flight was packed with other university groups, all decked out in scarlet and gray.

"The Buckeyes are the best team in the country and if we play our game there's nobody we can't beat," Smith said.

Kelly Dawes, owner of College Traditions, watched from Columbus.

"The momentum is like a snowball right now," Dawes said. "It's just getting bigger and bigger and better. So, it's a really exciting time to be a Buckeye.

Within minutes of the Rose Bowl win, College Traditions took to Facebook announcing it'll be selling commemorative t-shirts with the final score and Rose Bowl logo.

"These t-shirts people have collected for years and years and years," Dawes said.

Longtime Buckeye fan Don Martell is one of those people. He traveled from Cleveland Thursday to try to get his hands on one. He said he has close to 80 shirts in his collection.

"I'll have some old shirt on and it's amazing how many conversations that opens up," Martell said. "It's like so were you at that game? Sometimes I was, sometimes I wasn't."

According to Martell, there's something special about having a keepsake to remember such a historic season.

"I think we got the momentum, and we win it all this year," Martell said. "Go Bucks!"

Fans said they don't want to look too far ahead, but a national championship title is on their minds.

"The only word to use right now is anticipation," Cicerini said. "We know what we bring to the table. We know we can compete with anyone so now it's just time to show that and I know the fans are behind our guys 100%."

The Buckeyes take on Texas in the Cotton Bowl on Friday, Jan. 10. The t-shirts College Traditions is selling are already available online here.
