FBI provides updates on Bourbon Street attack

NEW ORLEANS, La. (KLFY) -- It has been more than 24 hours since the New Year's Bourbon Street attack, and a lot of information is unfolding as the FBI continues its investigation.

"First and foremost, let me be very clear about this point. This was an act of terrorism. It was premeditated and an evil act," said FBI Dep. Assistant Director Christopher Raya.

The investigation has led the FBI to believe the subject Shamsud-Din-Jabbar acted alone when he decided to plow through Bourbon Street killing 14 people and injuring dozens more. On the evening of Dec. 31, Jabbar drove from Houston to New Orleans. On his way, he posted multiple videos to social media declaring his loyalty to the terrorist group ISIS.

"We know that he specifically picked out Bourbon Street. I think one can assume that it was lots of people, New Year's Eve. You know, a target for an attack," Raya said.

A house in the St. Roch neighborhood in New Orleans is said to be an AirBnB where Jabbar was staying. The house caught fire around the time of the attack.

"The working theory now is that the fire started after Jabbar was already deceased. There's a lot of different ways that can happen. You could have different time devices. You could have a long cord that extended that time. You could also have pressure cookers that were put on top to still filled with gasoline and then it went off," said Joshua Jackson, Special Agent in charge of ATF New Orleans Field Division.

Surveillance footage shows Jabbar planting two IED's in coolers near Bourdon Street. Three phones and two laptops are linked to Jabbar, as the FBI is using digital media exploitations to recover everything they can.

"We're digging through more of the social media, more interviews, working with some of our other partners to ascertain a little bit more about that connection," Raya said.
