‘He’ll be fine…’: Australia star gives MASSIVE update on Mitchell Starc’s availability for Sydney Test
Australia left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc is likely to feature in the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar series despite showing signs of discomfort during the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. Though Starc did leave the field during India’s first innings on Day 3, he returned to bat without any issues the next day.
The seamer bowled a total of 16 overs during India’s second innings on the fifth day, finishing with figures of 1/25. Starc picked up the highly important wicket of Virat Kohli for just 5 runs to restrict India to 33/3 at one stage.
Australia Wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey is confident of Mitchell Starc’s availability for the next match. Carey called Starc one of the toughest cricketers he has seen, and he expects the quick to play in Sydney.
“He’ll be fine. He’ll push through. I’ve played with Starcy (Mitchell Starc) for a long time now, and (he’s) one of the toughest cricketers I’ve played with. He’ll grimace, he’ll grab his rib no doubt, but he’ll be ready for the contest,” Carey told reporters.
Carey also hailed Starc for his spell during India’s second innings and said that the seamer has been a quality player for a long time now.
“I thought first spell (in the second innings) without the reward was some of the best bowling I’ve seen this series from him. He’s a quality player and has been for a long time,” Carey said.
“He’s got an opportunity now to help this team in a Test match. He’ll be up for the contest, and I think his bowling’s just gotten better throughout the series,” Carey added.
Starc is the fourth-highest wicket-taker in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series with 15 scalps under his name so far. If the pacer does end up missing the Sydney Test, then fellow seamer Jhye Richardson will be the one who will likely be chosen as his replacement.
