2024: Deadliest year for Pakistani Security Forces in a decade

0

Recent studies by Pakistan’s security centers reveal that the country’s military has experienced the “deadliest year” in the past decade, with violence in Pakistan increasing by 66% compared to 2023.

The Pakistani Center for Research and Security Studies, in a report published on Tuesday, December 31, stated that at least 685 Pakistani security forces were killed in 444 militant attacks during 2024.

This data indicates that 2024 has been the “deadliest year” for Pakistani military personnel in the past nine years. The recorded casualties also show that a total of 1,612 people, including security forces and civilians, were killed as a result of violent attacks.

The findings from the Pakistani Center suggest that violence in 2024 has surged by 66% compared to the previous year, with a total of 2,267 people wounded in these violent incidents.

Most of the violent events in 2024 were registered in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, and the Pakistani military has focused a large portion of its operations on countering what it describes as terrorism in these two provinces.

Reports indicate that 94% of the total casualties last year occurred in the provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, which are predominantly Pashtun and Baloch areas in Pakistan.

The Pakistan Army has reported conducting over 59,775 operations, which resulted in the deaths of 925 militants.

The surge in violence reflects an alarming trend of rising insecurity in the country, exacerbated by insurgent and militant groups targeting both security personnel and civilians. As these attacks continue to rise, it raises concerns about the long-term stability of Pakistan, particularly in regions such as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, where the military is heavily engaged.

The government’s ongoing struggle to curb militancy and restore peace underscores the growing challenges faced by Pakistan. With insurgent groups operating across the border, particularly in Afghanistan, the situation is expected to remain volatile, and the military’s efforts may continue to face significant hurdles in securing the country.
