Heung-min Son is likely to leave Spurs this summer – Pundit argues

Tony Cascarino believes that we might see Heung-min Son make a shock Spurs exit at the end of this season unless he has a roaring next few months in front of goal.

Heung-min Son is no longer the Spurs star he once was

While there is no doubting Heung-min Son’s Tottenham legacy and what he has done for the club over the last decade, there appears to be mounting evidence that he is no longer the player he once was.

The 32-year-old appears to have lost a yard of pace, seemingly incapable of those trademark lung-busting runs off the ball that defined much of his Spurs career.

The South Korean has also not shown the kind of killer instinct in front of goal that Tottenham supporters have come to expect, uncharacteristically snatching at chances.

Heung-min Son and Spurs are set for divorce – Tony Cascarino

The Tottenham captain‘s poor run of form comes on the backdrop of his contract running out in the summer, although Spurs do have the option to extend his deal by 12 months, which the club are reportedly expected to activate.

However, Cascarino has suggested that the Lilywhites might not take up the option, and may choose to part ways with the forward at the end of the season.

The pundit told talkSPORT: “I don’t think Son will stay at Spurs. No, I don’t. I think it’s one of them that you’ve got to make a big call on as well. He’s been brilliant for them over the years, but it’s time to move on in football sometimes.”

The former Chelsea striker believes that it will take a major resurgence from the forward in the second half of the season to convince Tottenham to stick with him.

He adds: “He will survive, or they would definitely keep him, if he had a second part of the season that was superb.

“If he has that season where it hasn’t really worked to now, and then he goes and gets 15 or 12 goals in the second part of the season, plays well, then Tottenham will probably use that option. But as it is today, I think it’s more likely that he could go.”

Tottenham will activate the one-year extension

Even if Spurs decide to sell Heung-min Son next summer, they would still have to activate the one-year extension if they want to get a fee for him.

There is no doubt that the club will take up the option, but the big question is whether they would offer him an improved longer-term contract.

That will very much depend on how the Spurs skipper does from now until the end of the season. We certainly should not be writing off great players like Son, who is more than capable of getting another 10 to 15 goals this season.
