Stock market today: Global shares trade mixed as some markets are closed on New Year's Eve

Global markets shares are mixed, with trading closed in Germany, Tokyo and Seoul for New Year holidays. Shares rose in France and were little changed in Britain. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 fell, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose, while the Shanghai Composite fell after China’s manufacturing data seemed to show that Beijing’s stimulus measures haven't sufficed to boost the nation’s sluggish economy. U.S. futures edged higher. U.S. markets are nearing the close of a stellar year driven by a growing economy, solid consumer spending and a strong jobs market. On Monday, the S&P 500 shed 1.1% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1%. The Nasdaq composite ended 1.2% lower.
