Details emerge in Ross prison officer's death

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- New details have been released from a conduct report filed earlier this year by a Ross Correctional Institution officer against the inmate who is accused of killing him

In the report, filed on April 1, Officer Andrew Lansing accused inmate Rashawn Cannon of swearing and yelling while Cannon was on the telephone.

Lansing wrote that Cannon then started swearing at him, and other inmates gathered around both of them. Lansing said he told them to step away. Cannon was then allowed to finish his phone call, placed in cuffs, and escorted out.

Cannon was eventually found guilty by the prison rules board of disobeying a direct order.

Cannon is accused of killing Lansing on Christmas morning, while Lansing was on duty in a guard shack.

According to records from the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, this was one of 11 conduct reports filed by guards against Cannon a little more than a year into his prison term.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating Lansing’s death.
